Mastodon - Blood Mountain

Info

This is Mastodon's third full-length album, and third concept album. It is released in 2006 september. Recorded at Robert Lang Studios, Studio Litho and EK Studios, Seattle, Washington.
The album has recieved alot of good critics. Bassist, Troy Sanders, considers this album to be the best album they have done (as of Blood Mountain).

Personal Opinion

Great album, not as great as Leviathan, but awesome. For me the songs don't flow together like Leviathan. It doesn't really give the feel of anything in particular, it's a little unorganized like The Guardian reviewed it as. The drums are unexpected and crazy like allways, Brann allways make great drum patterns...allways! The vocals are more clean, melodic and plays a bigger role than before, you'll notice this in later albums.

My favorite songs from this album has to be; "Crystal Skull", "Sleeping Giant", "Colony of Birchmen" and "Capillarian Crest". Capillarian includes the most progy riff they've ever made here is a video of Brann Dailor playing it:

Overall it is a great album, but I am missing a spesific feel and flow to it. Therefore I give it:

7/10!

Next up will be Crack The Skye!

Mastodon - Leviathan

Info

This is Mastodon's second studio album. Released in 2004 by Relapse Records, recorded at Rober Land studios in Seattle, Washington. It is their first concept album and is based on Herman Melville's novel Moby Dick. In 2009, MetalSucks compiled a list of the "21 best metal albums of the 21th century so far", where Leviathan was placed number one on the list. The incredible artwork and design is done by Paul A. Romano.

Tracklist:
Blood and Thunder
I Am Ahab
Seabeast
Island
Iron Tusk
Megaladon
Naked Burn
Aqua Dementia
Hearts Alive
Joseph Merrick (instrumental)

Iron Tusk, Blood and Thunder and Seabeast was also released as singles.

Personal Opinion

Leviathan, one of my favorite albums. It has brought me countless hours of joy. For me this is their second best album, just behind Crack the Skye. It contains awesome, progy and heavy riffs played over Brann's crazy drumming. A perfect example is Seabeast, which starts off with a beautiful guitar lick and then jumps right into a odd time verse with Brent's vocals following. The whole album really gives you the feel of the sea.  And I highly recommand listening to it!

10/10!

Next post I will be talking about Mastodon's second concept album: Blood Mountain!

Mastodon

Mastodon

Im going to talk a little about the band Mastodon which I've listened way to much for the past year.
They play really agressive progressive metal. Over the course of five albums they have progressed from screaming their heads off, to more relaxed slow melodic songs. But dont get me wrong they still play metal. The members are, from left to right, Brann Dailor (drums, vokal), Brent Hinds (guitar, vocals), Troy Sanders (bass, vocals), Bill Kelliher (guitar).

Next post I will be talking about the album Levathian by Mastodon. Here is a song from Levathian called Blood and Thunder.
